Exploring Highland Park and the Old City, Baku’s captivating history dates back to ancient times, though its exact origins remain uncertain. Located on the Absheron Peninsula, the city benefits from a prime geographical position, featuring a calm bay, warm dry climate, fertile soil, and abundant natural resources. These conditions naturally encouraged the development of early settlements in the region.
Highland Park, situated on a hill in the western part of the city, offers the best panoramic views of Baku, including Baku Bay and the Seaside Boulevard, which marked its 110th anniversary in 2019. Visitors will also explore the Old City, known as “Icheri Sheher.” This historic area is home to numerous architectural and cultural landmarks, such as the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, the iconic Maiden Tower (viewed externally), caravanserais, mosques, and more.
The tour continues with a visit to the Heydar Aliyev Center, designed by renowned architect Zaha Hadid. Recognized globally as an architectural masterpiece, the Center is a modern symbol of Baku with its innovative and futuristic design. It earned the prestigious “Design of the Year Award” in 2014. Embark on an excursion to the Gobustan Historical and Archaeological Reserve, an open-air museum situated in the southeastern part of the Greater Caucasus. Gobustan is renowned for its petroglyphs—rock carvings dating back 5,000 to 20,000 years—which serve as an artistic archive of human evolution. These well-preserved carvings chronicle nearly 15,000 years of history, spanning from the late Upper Paleolithic period to the Middle Ages. Azerbaijani researchers have identified and studied over 4,000 petroglyphs, and their work continues to uncover more about this fascinating heritage. Before exploring the reserve, visitors can tour the interactive Gobustan Museum, which provides an engaging overview of the site’s history and natural environment through multimedia displays and touchscreens.
The journey continues with a visit to the Ateshgah Fire Temple and the burning hill of Yanardag, highlighting the ancient legacy of Zoroastrianism. Located 30 km from Baku, the Ateshgah Temple is a unique and mysterious site. Once a sacred place for Zoroastrians, it later became a temple for 18th-century Indian Shiva devotees. Built around a natural gas vent, the temple is famous for its “eternal fire,” which has burned for centuries. Next is Yanardag, a mesmerizing hillside where natural gas seeps through the earth’s crust, creating a continuous flame. This phenomenon was described as early as the 13th century by Marco Polo during his travels to the Persian city of Baku.
